Volunteers from Boston in Bloom, Your Day – Your Say a support service for individuals with a learning difficulty and Transported, a community-focused programme to encourage activities in art, came together to help plant the new Art Deco garden, designed by artist and award winning garden designer Jeni Cairns of Juniper garden design.

Following group discussions with Ian Farmer, Partnerships and Sustainability Manager and Jenny Moore, Environment and Sustainability Officer, from Boston Borough Council, the new garden is under construction to mark Central Park’s centenary in two years’ time and will reflect the original art deco styling of the day.

Art Deco is an architectural and decorative arts style characterised by stylised geometric forms which can be seen in local buildings such as Marks & Spencer, the West End Cinema and the Cammac’s shop.

Jeni Cairns said that by mixing traditional flowers, such as roses, and modern plants, such as grasses, the design was “taking from the past with our own spin”. Jasmine, Rosemary and Lavender have also been planted to add a mixture of fragrance for passers-by. Jeni also spoke about four metal arches she is designing for the garden, “the arches will be made of corten steel and cut to a traditional flower based design, inspired by the works of the French iron worker Edgar Brandt. The corten steel will settle to a rust colour over time and compliment the brown paths through the garden beds”.

As part of the On Your Door Step programme run by Transported, Community programme manager, Lauren Williams, said “putting art in public spaces, with involvement of local community groups, we aim to increase a sense of pride in the area”. Transported’s Boston Gateway project has completed art installations near the Police station, bus station and train station.
