For numerous years, the Boston in Bloom Partnership has encouraged local schools to participate in the campaign and judging route, allowing students to learn more about how local produce grows and the benefits of health eating.
Last year, Boston West Academy chose to participate, allowing judges and the committee to look around the school’s state-of-the-art growing facilities, which assisted in Boston retaining it’s gold medal for a fourth consecutive year.
Looking into 2019, the Boston in Bloom partnership are excited to announce that Boston Witham Academies Federation’s Haven High Academy have agreed to join the campaign and become the education partner for the year.
The academy already encourages it’s students to grow-at-home, and has an allotment within the schools grounds, with students having the ability to hand grow vegetables, and, soon will have the addition of a polytunnel to assist with produce growth.
Judges will call into the school and take a small tour of the grounds and meet students involved with the produce growth, before continuing to Willoughby Road Allotments, where additional students will be showing their catering skills by producing “nibbles” for the judges to sample.
Speaking of the announcement, Boston in Bloom partnership chairman, Alison Fairman said: “I’m really excited to welcome students from Haven High Academy on board with Boston in Bloom this year. The Boston Witham Academies Federation have a keen interest in providing a tailored education that also benefits a healthy lifestyle, and we’re delighted to be able to encompass this within the 2019 Boston in Bloom route, allowing the judges to meet students who are working with the produce growing.”
On behalf of the Boston Witham Academies Federation, Emma Firth said: “It’s an exciting time for Haven High Academy and BWAF to be working with Boston in Bloom. We’re delighted to be working with the partnership this year and to be incorporated into the 2019 judging route, showing off our newly launched healthy living educational programme, along with introducing the judging panel to some of the students involved in the scheme.
Furthermore, it’s an honour for students to be approached to assist with the catering post judging at Willoughby Road Allotments, using their fantastic new catering and community facilities.”
