Wonderfully designed bird boxes, created by Boston College Carpentry students have taken pride of place outside St. Botolph’s Church (The Stump).
Students William Hicks (17), Thomas Flaherty (17) and Jay Pilgrim (17) battled gusts of wind to ensure secure fixings for the boxes which will form part of a new garden near the Herbert Ingram Memorial. The location and design is hoped to catch the eye of the East Midlands in Bloom judges when they take residence at the Stump for the awards ceremony in September.
The bird box idea was hatched by South Lincolnshire Horticultural chairman, Bridget Sykes and in-bloomer Paul Collingwood took it to the college where lecturer Mike Pryjdun enthused his 17-year-old Level 1 students. Explaining why he wanted the students to be involved, Paul said “the students make a connection with the town and its history and can look at the display with a sense of pride”.
Speaking about the choice of location for the bird boxes, Bridget said “I saw the same idea abroad and thought it was fabulous, it adds colour and interest to this area of the stump and compliments the knot garden nearby”.
Paul thanked South Lincolnshire Scaffolding for supplying the poles for the nesting box display and Aston Robinson, from Pelo Hair and Eden Beauty Salon in Wormgate, for sponsoring the display area.
